God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in Spirit and in truth.”
There was a gathering in the school's open-air tent. It was a time of worship and praise. We were just outside of the tent listening. "What do you think of when you hear the word "worship?"", asked the teacher.
"Singing, hymms, prayers, words of praise..." These are outward forms of worship", he said. "That's how worship gets manifested. But, what's the heart of worship? I'll give you one definition. It's found in the New Covenant Scriptures. It appears only in Greek, and it's the word PROSKUNEO. And do you know what that means? It means to kiss. True worship is to kiss." Now, what does this reveal to us? What is a kiss?"
"A kiss is the most intimate of acts. Therefore, worship is to be the most intimate thing you can experience. To worship God is to kiss God? In the spirit realm, yes, to kiss Him from your heart, from your innermost being. Not because you have to but because you want to. True worship is never done by compulsion, but freely from the overflow of the heart."
"Think about this", he added. "Why does one kiss? A kiss is an expression of joy. And conversely, kissing brings us joy - by worshiping we make the heart of God glad.
So, true worship is an expression of joy. Our joy becomes worship and our worship becomes joy.
"How about love?" A student asked. Don't we kiss because we love?"
"Yes!, A kiss is also an expression of love"
So what then, is to worship in spirit and in truth? Worship is an expression of love and joy. It is expressed when we can no longer contain these feelings in our heart. Worship is as simple as kissing God out of love.
"Worship the Lord in the splendor of His holiness; tremble before him all the earth." Psalm 96:9
Draw near to God through worship, in love and joy, experiencing the deepest of intimacy.
"Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.”
